The History of the 15x15 Grid
The world's most famous word game was born out of necessity. Invented in 1933 during the Great Depression by American architect Alfred Mosher Butts, the game was originally named Lexiko (and briefly Criss-Cross Words) before adopting the moniker we know today.
Butts meticulously analyzed the front page of The New York Times to calculate the exact frequency of letters in the English language. This research resulted in the iconic 100-tile set and the legendary 15x15 grid layout striking the perfect balance of skill and chance that continues to define family game nights and competitive tournaments worldwide.
